A Special Place, Lovingly Tended By Special People
It started with the water lilies. They are a favourite flower in our family. Then the dragonflies and their blue gossamer wings. Breathtaking. And that was before we even entered the front door of L’Ancienne Ecole.
Once inside, we knew we were in a home, not a house. A place that someone – in this case, Isabelle, Paul and Amelia – had invested with skill and sensibility, charm and love. Their personal touch was evident in every room, in every corner. They wove their respect for the environment throughout – the washing machine bio-ball, the salt-water pool, the micro-fibre pool towels.
Over the next 10 days, our family explored every part of L’Anciene Ecole. We enjoyed morning coffee by the goldfish ponds, played board games in the dining room’s midday coolness, had our aperitif on the shady side patio and laid our evening feast in the outdoor dining area. We perfected our tans by poolside and counted the different varieties of fruit trees in the back garden. We slept with windows open to enjoy the freshness of night. At times, we would stroke the wood of the ancient staircase, its smoothness divulging years of use. Paul even shared with us a bit of the school’s history, opening the under-house garage to reveal the mammoth beams and wall paint of the original four-room edifice.
L’Ancienne Ecole’s location in Beaumont-du-Perigord could not have been handier for a family whose ages span 11 to 84 years. With only a five minute walk to the main square, we visited every market day, all the shops and each night-time event, knowing that it was easy if one or another wanted to retire early while the rest stayed to celebrate. A particular favourite was the quincaillerie, which seems to stock everything in the world (apart from espadrilles).
Being in such a central bastide town made trips further afield so simple. Between canoeing, chateau hopping, wine tasting or simply walking the surrounding countryside’s well-signposted paths, we had as little or as much activity as we wished.
All of this was made possible thanks to the hospitality and warmth of Isabelle, Paul and Amelia, the latter who arranged bouquets of garden flowers throughout the house for our arrival. They made us feel very welcome, so much so that we have booked a longer stay at L’Ancienne Ecole for next year. It cannot come soon enough for us.
Fantastic Holiday In The Heart Of A French Village
L’Ancienne Ecole is big, bright and beautifully furnished.
There is plenty of room for everyone to have their own space even if the house is full to capacity. The owners, Isabelle and Paul, are friendly and welcoming and go the extra mile to make sure their guests have everything they need for the perfect holiday.
Outside there are many different places to sit and enjoy the sunshine, with a lovely pool and shady outside dining area. The house is no more than a two minute walk from the village square with a variety of shops, two bars and an excellent pizzeria. Just up one of the little lanes leading from the square is lovely restaurant, Chez Claudette, and the second restaurant is literally a few steps away from the house. For such a small village there was a lot to do, from the marked walking trails and little shops and galleries to the entertainment on the square which ranged from morning markets and craft fairs to a range of evening entertainment including a performance of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” (which we watched from the nearby bar.).
The fabulous “Marche des Gourmands” on a Monday evening is well worth a visit with live entertainment and a wide variety of food and drink on offer, produce of the local farms. Excellent!
Beaumont du Perigord is also an excellent base for visiting the other bastide towns in the region including Montpazier and Issigeac. Nearby Bergerac is also well worth a visit. All in all a fantastic holiday which I would highly recommend.
Beaumont Is Very Lovely With All The Amenities In Walking Distance
I have just returned from a wonderful week staying at L’Ancienne Ecole.
The owners Isabelle & Paul were a pleasure to deal with, making the booking process very easy & informative.
I travelled with a party of 9 (5 adults/4 children) and we found the size of this house perfect. The interior was beautifully furnished, very clean & had everything we needed (including toys for the children!). The property was larger than we had imagined which gave us all plenty of space.
The garden is split into different areas with plenty of seating available all around the house. We really enjoyed the BBQ & terrrace where we had some lovely lunches & evenings.
The pool area was fantastic, again much larger than we expected with the added bonus of table tennis & badminton to keep us all amused.
The location of this property is perfect too. Beaumont is very lovely with all the amenities in walking distance. Other places eg. Salat, Baynac & Bergerac are within easy reach by car.
We all had a great holiday & would recommend staying here to anyone.
All Age Groups In Our Party Were Entertained
The house was beautiful and Isabelle had equipped it to meet all of our needs. She had provided both bath and pool towels. She was very welcoming and couldn’t have been more helpful.
It was very convenient for the local shops and restaurants, and the surrounding countryside was very picturesque. All age groups in our party were entertained:
– 14 year-old son with ping pong and pool
– 79 year-old mother strolling around the boulangerie and charcuterie
– 18 year-old daughter happy to wander around the art galleries and sit in the bars
– five year old entertained with pony rides in the village square, board games and swimming pool
All of us enjoyed the delicious local cuisine, oh, and Bergerac wine.
Couldn’t Have Wished For Better…
We absolutely loved our stay at L’Ancienne Ecole, it totally exceeded our expectations. We were a group of nine, ages ranging from 4 to 60+. This was our first large family holiday so it was important we found somewhere that would give us both the space we required and a hassle free stay. We definitely succeeded.
We flew into Bergerac, it took us 25 minutes to drive from there to the house and the route was really straightforward. The house is beautiful, very private and secure, yet a stone’s throw away from the centre of the pretty little village of Beaumont du Perigord. Having previously stayed in more remotely situated properties in France, we were really glad we’d opted for something slightly different on this occasion. The village is close enough to be really convenient but just the right distance away to not feel like you’re right in the middle of it. The handful of little patisseries, butchers, restaurants and cafe/bars situated around the village square were perfect to pick up groceries from or to relax outside of. A slightly larger supermarket was just a five minute drive up the road.
The house itself offered plenty of space, so we never felt like we were under one another’s feet. The interior decor is clean and modern, ideal if you were staying out of season or had a rainy day inside. The bedrooms were all clean, comfortable and surprisingly spacious. The pool area is gorgeous, peaceful and a great sun trap. The built in BBQ and outside dining area easily accommodated us twice a day for long, lazy meals. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and perfect for long walks or runs. With everything we needed and the comfort it offered us, we only ended up leaving the house/village once during our stay! No need to go anywhere if you’re just looking for a relaxing break with family and/or friends.
Isabelle and Paul (the owners) were delightful and very helpful, especially answering our questions prior to the trip and providing us with detailed information in preparation for our stay.
I can safely say we all left wishing we had much longer in this wonderful house. It will be hard not to go back there again as the property and location ticked so many boxes for us.
PS. Don’t miss the Monday night food-market/banquet in the village square, a really great experience (bring your own booze and cutlery though!).
All You Need To Take Is Your clothes And Swim Costume For The Lovely Pool.
We rented the villa for a family holiday, with family coming from Canada and the UK.
The property is truly beautiful and actually the pictures as lovely as they are do not do it justice.
We had 9 people staying and the size of the property we never felt under each others feet. The landlords are absolutely delighted and made us feel at home and very welcome.
I cannot recommend the property highly enough, everything is wonderful maintained and there is everything you would need for a stay, all you need to take is your clothes and swim costume for the lovely pool.
The town is very good and had a wonderful music and food festival on a Monday night which was brilliant and happens every Monday though the summer. As you are in the Dordoyne there is some much to see and do, you will never be bored and there is something for everyone.

A beautiful House In A Great Location
We highly recommend L’ancienne Ecole. It is a really beautiful house, very private yet in the heart of the village with its bars , restaurants and local shops. The swimming pool is fantastic to cool off in after hours soaking up the sun. You can spend your whole holiday enjoying the house and village or use it as a base to explore the region – either way it’s a real treat.
