Ride Like The Wind

Ride Like The Wind

Today we decide to pop in Sarlat for the saturday market and following my recent article (http://bit.ly/2nKzsqE), we explored the Green Way Path. Despite a grey sky, we did not get any rain and had a great time. We promised ourselves to return to do the 35km of the Green Way!

You're Gonna Go Far, Kid!

You're Gonna Go Far, Kid!

I ve talked recently about a great family friendly outdoor activity near Sarlat, the Green Way Path: http://bit.ly/2nKzsqE where you can practice your favorite sport or just go for a gentle stroll. It made me wonder about young children and how far they can walk depending on their age.

According to BougerEnFamille.com, here's what you should expect from a child who is used to walk on regular basis :
3 years: 3 km
4 years: 4 km
5 years: 5 km
6 years: 7 km
8 years: 11 km

Don't forget to make plenty of time for breaks (for children under 12 years: 10 to 15mins every hour) and plan adequally since they reckon you need 50% extra time compared to adults.

Wherever we go, we always carry a First Aid kit and medicine like Arnica Montana 9ch, (homeopathic remedy for bruising) along with some hypoallergenic wipes (handy to clean hands and face) snacks like dried fruit, energy bars and juice boxes for our 9 year old daughter. Always be prepared!

And don't forget, you don't need to walk far for an ice cream if you're staying at l'Ancienne Ecole, our holiday accomodation near Bergerac. We're located right in the middle of an historic village and the square with cafés, restaurants, chemist, banks, shops… is only a few steps away.

A Star Is Born: Maxange Cave

A Star Is Born: Maxange Cave

From the World famous cave of Lascaux The Dordogne Valley has some of the most spectacular prehistoric cave art in the world.

I ve written before about some of them but today I d like to talk to you about one of the most recent cave discoveries and unique in the world for the shape of its concretions: Maxange Cave.

In Le Buisson de Cadouin, between Bergerac and Sarlat, the Maxange Cave have been discovered by accident by Angel Caballero while he was working in his quarry in 2000. The site became classified and opened to the public in 2003. With 30 000 visitors per year and 250 meters of illuminated gallery, it is smaller than its "sisters" but nevertheless not to be under estimated. True masterpiece of Mother Nature, it offers the magic of a display of eccentric concretions of 1,50 meters which is unique in the world. Like stars, they gave the cave the name of "Cave of the Stars".

And what makes this visit so unique is the fact that you get to talk to the founder of the cave itself, Angelo Caballero, since he will your guide!

You can catch a glimpse of Maxange Cave on this video: http://bit.ly/2nNqqWG

Location: 18km from L'Ancienne Ecole, our rental in Beaumont du Perigord.

Don't be "koi" and enjoy and AN-AMAZing Child friendly Water Garden!

Don't be "koi" and enjoy and AN-AMAZing Child friendly Water Garden!

Only 8kms from Sarlat and 60km from our rental, you'll find this 8th wonder of the world where the whole family can enjoy a day out.

Up till 1999, this amazing water garden, the "Jardins d'Eau" in Carsac Aillac (24200) used to be a field. While digging up to set up the garden, the private owner stumbled accross a gallo roman aquaduct that brought in the water from a nearby source. He decided to restore it and now visitors can walk this 3 hectares park and admire 30 breeds of lotus and 55 type of nympheas with the sound of the water flowing in the background. The latest addition is the aquatic maze where you'll enjoy the beautiful plants trying to make their way up while you'll be trying to find your way out!
We spent a fantastic afternoon here and went home all relaxed and zen. This place is a true gem, away from the over- crowded touristic places and off the beaten track. A slice of paradise!

Special note for family with kiddies: each child receives a container with food to feed the koi fish and the under 10s, get in for free.

The place is full packed with little details that make the visit more enjoyable like the japonese paper umbrella you can borrow on a hot day, moustique sprays for the night visits…numerous benches to have a rest in the shade… and a lovely sitting area overlooking the ponds where you can get some refreshments.
