France's most famous prehistoric cave paintings are in Lascaux, 2km southeast of Montignac. And if you wonder why they re 4 of them, here's the explanation:
Lascaux I: The one and only, the real thing! Discovered on September 12, 1940, by 4 teenagers (Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Simon Coencas and Georges Agniel) on the hill overlooking Montignac village. It is one of the most prestigious 20th century archaeological discoveries. It has been shut off from tourists since 1963 due to deterioration from carbon dioxide.
Lascaux II: It is an exact copy of the 2 main halls of Lascaux. It contains 90% of the paintings of Lascaux. Now closed. Reopening 31 mars 2018 .
Lascaux III: an 800 sq m kit-form mobile exhibition, made by Périgord's facsimile workshop– has been travelling the globe since 2012.
Lascaux IV (Centre International D'art Pariétal). Opened in December 2016. For the first time, all of Lascaux is revealed. A complete stunning new replica using interactive guides and multi-screen displays.
We have seen Lascaux II but not Lascaux IV so it is on our list of places to explore. If you've seen Lascaux IV, I d love to hear your thoughts about it.
