Is It The End Of The Beynac Bypass Project For Good?

Is It The End Of The Beynac Bypass Project For Good?

It looks like it is !

After many years in the pipeline, this 32 million of euros project got the green light in early 2018 and work started shortly after.

But in december 2018, the State Council put it on hold ruling in favor of the wildlife and heritage organizations. More infos: read my article: here).

Yesterday 09/04/19, the Administrative Court of Bordeaux cancelled the authorisation to build the bypass. So from “suspended” the project got “cancelled” and demolition order was given (total cost: 15 million).

Despite losing, the Chairman of the Departmental Council of Dordogne, Germinal Peiro, does not seem to be defeated by this decision. He confirmed that he is going to appeal!

The project has been going on for quite some time opposing wildlife and heritage organizations with the support of local mayor against the Departmental Council of Dordogne.

In clear:
What is it: 3,4km of new road linking the D703 to the D49+2 bridges+railway bridge
Why: To reduce the summer holiday traffic in Beynac.
How much: 32 million of euros

To improve the traffic, Beynac has already widened the main road and sidewalks with success.

According to the wildlife and heritage organizations, the bypass will wreak havoc on protected species (the area is a sanctuary for rare species) and cuts right through an area of outstanding natural beauty.

On the 28th of december, 2018, the State Council decided to put on hold the project (roadworks have been going on since january 2018 and already half of the cost, 20 million of euros has been spent)

UPDATE 09/04/2019: Administrative Court in Bordeaux cancelled the project (my full article here)
